A New Pseudonym?

Thursday, November 16, 2006
Clare has inspired me.

I've been discontented with the "Publius" sobriquet for quite some time now. Originally this blog was going to be a partnership, hence the use of Hamilton & Madison's joint pen name in the Federalist Papers. SOMEBODY bailed out on me, however, making the nickname moot. Then I discovered there were like 20 "Publius" bloggers out there, making the nickname boring. Finally I learned last week that people pronounce it like it has something to do with genitalia, making the nickname embarassing.

So, my question is.. do you think I should change my blogger nickname? And if so, do you have any suggestions?

  • Hmmmm... will have to think about that one.

Are you sticking with a classical bent?

  • Classical would be nice. I've also considered the French Revolution. I've always had a soft spot for Danton.

  • How 'bout you just suck it up and add the 'e' that some people try to pronounce your name with anyway. I bet you'll have a unique pseud that way.

Or maybe you would prefer something more classical, like the great Roman consul Manius Valerius Maximus Corvinus Messalla?

  • Name changing, hmm... am still gonna change mine. But, well, you know how knowing someone's name is having power over them (for some cultures) and how knowing their name in a sense it's, well, it's their identity. You ARE Publius. I AM Clare. So when we change that, well, you're changing who you are in a sense. It's weird for those who have to call you a different name. I thought of this when La Lecturess became Flavia.
Not very well put, but do you see my point?
If you do change your name, please go with Sheepish's suggestion. It's too good!

  • I changed my blog name once. I was s.t.r. Then I was Jesse (s.t.r.) Then just Jesse.

If I had to pick a name for you, it would be:

    Dazzalyrn

Yes. That is what it would be.

  • But if you change your pseudonym, we won't be able to mock you so easily when we see you in person. Oh, wait, I bet we'll still be able to find a way :-)

  • Sheepish: Messalla wasn't that great a consul, which leads one to suspect that you only chose it because of the length of the name. :)

Clare: But I never really liked Publius! Of course, I've never been crazy about my real name either.

Jesse: Well at least it would be different!

Repressed Librarian: There is always plenty to make fun of me about.

  • Maybe you should just jazz it up a little. How about Pubalicious?
