Dissertation Blues

Wednesday, January 03, 2007
Dear Luckybuzz: I know how you feel.

I don't talk about it much, but I also have working on my dissertation. See, I'm a member of the club too! It's been dragging on for years now, in part because of the delays & inconviences that life has an irritating way of generating. But 2007 is supposed to be my big year, the year I finally finish. I'm this close to finishing my data collection. For the last few months I've been zooming merrily along, but now there are more of those predictably tedious obstacles:

1) My advsior (who is great, actually) has surprised me by suggesting I need to go back and collect some more data (and he NEVER says I need to do more! Whenever I suggest something else, he says I shouldn't do it.)

2) The stuff I'm doing at work right now is virtually identical to what I'm doing for my data collection. And there is just NO WAY I can do something for my job for 8 hours and then go home and do it for hours more. I would just go crazy.

So there goes another month down the drain.

  • Well--I do love the empathy, though I'm sorry you're dealing with D-crap too. I have nightmares about your #1--my advisor *never* tells me to do more, and I'm almost positive that he'll suddenly decide I need to. Or that my new advisor, when he leaves, will be all, "oh, you have WAY more data collection to do." Ugh.

But 2007 is still new. Keeping my fingers crossed for uber-productivity for you.

  • We can do it. I mean, we're bound to finish eventually. Right? Right?

  • I guess I thought you already had finished your dissertation, Arbitrista. I don't know why I thought that... Anyhow, dissertating totally does suck. I put mine off for a few months and then I had to work full time on it to finish it by my moving deadline for my new job. Suck suck suck. I hope you finish it soon!

  • It is quite horrible when your day job mimics what you should be doing durning your own time. On one hand, your job can be A'Ok, on the other it drains you and slows progress. I suffer this daily.

I feel your pain, in a non- dissertation, but I really wish I had the energy to finish that painting sort of a way.

  • Take just one or two of the suggestions from books about getting your dissertation done... I like the work in 30 minute chunks -- complete with timer -- advise.

The thing is that getting chunks of it done will make you feel better and more motivated to get more of it done... or, at least that is what I tell myself, so if it doesn't work, don't burst my bubble :).
