Watching the frenzy over who's going to be Obama's running mate is pretty amusing. Does anybody have any idea how unimportant running mates are? They're worth about 2 points in their home state. Whoop-de-doo. Sure, they can help reunify the party, but it's pretty difficult to disentangle how much of that is due to the convention and how much due to the vice presidential candidate.

Speaking for myself, I just hope it's not Bayh. Throwing away a perfectly good vote in the Senate is simply stupid.

  • Good point. I'm more than a bit disappointed (but not surprised) that it's going to be another white man.

What do you think of the recent polls that show O's lead declining?

  • Well, I still think there's a reasonable chance that Sebelius could get the nod - which would make me happy. But the Obama folk might be thinking that it's a little too daring to have a black man and white woman on the ticket - too many precedents broken at once and all that. It's an understandable thought, and one I take seriously.

As for Obama's declining lead, it's probably some combination of 1) random variation, 2) McCain consolidating the Republican base (which was bound to happen eventually), 3) the Georgia crisis, and 4) the effectiveness of McCain's attacks on Obama and the latter's lack of effective response.

I think that the D's will rally soon (dealing with 2), Georgia will drop off the headlines (3), and Obama has taken very good advantage of McCain's major blunder with the houses gaffe. So I still feel pretty confident about the election.
